Vermont bill could require hunters to wear orange
GRANBY, Vt. — A lifelong hunter who was shot by another hunter while sitting on a tree stump and using a moose call says he’s supporting a bill requiring hunters in Vermont to wear fluorescent orange like those in 40 other states already do.
Calvin Noble lost his right leg after being shot by a Pennsylvania man in 2008. The shooter says he thought Noble was a bear.
State Sen. Vincent Illuzzi (il-OO’-zee) proposed the bill in response to Noble’s shooting and two others in northern Vermont, including one in which a father killed his son while hunting. He says the tragedies are preventable.
Colorado says it has seen a dramatic drop in hunter deaths since the 1970s, when it mandated clothing colored blaze orange.
But some hunters say orange could be spotted by the animals they’re pursuing.
